Labdanum.
Vetiver comes from the roots of a tropical grass, mostly grown in Haiti and Java, and smells earthy, smoky, and green all at once. It's a classic men's perfumery material going back decades, but modern niche houses have pushed it in fresher, more unexpected directions, pairing it with citrus, leather, or even fruit rather than keeping it purely traditional.
BDK Parfums' Gris Charnel and its Extrait use vetiver as a smoky, grounding base beneath incense and spice. Widian's Liwa pairs it with oud for real depth, while Vilhelm Parfumerie's Poets of Berlin shows a greener, more literary take on the material.
