Le Mat

The Fool steps forward: freedom, instinct and risk. Mendittorosa Le Mat is considered one of the most iconic artistic niche fragrances, a sensual chypré Extrait de Parfum in which Indonesian patchouli anchors Rosa Centifolia from Grasse and Spanish immortelle, warmed by nutmeg, black pepper, cloves and Egyptian geranium. It was composed by perfumer Anne-Sophie Behaghel of Flair Paris, with concept and creative design by Stefania Squeglia, and has become a cult favourite among serious fragrance collectors.

The Story

Le Mat is inspired by the Tarot card of the same name, "The Fool," numbered 0 and XXII, which stands for the beginning of a spiritual journey: freedom, instinct, mystery, risk, chance and transformation, the cycle of ending and beginning. The idea is to walk forward with feet on the earth and eyes on the sky. The heavy French glass bottle wears a hand-moulded clay cap by Tuscan sculptor Alessandro Reggioli with a terracotta charm and a small bell, and comes in a handmade wooden case with a Marseille tarot card facsimile. It was launched in 2014, and is concentrated at 24%.

How It Smells

Opening
A striking smoky-spicy warmth, driven by nutmeg, black pepper and cloves, immediately wrapped in immortelle, incense, woods and slightly animalic, leathery nuances.

Heart
Rose centifolia and Egyptian geranium give the spices a floral, herbal softness, while the fragrance keeps shifting between sacred smoke, dry herbs and golden warmth.

Dry Down
Indonesian patchouli and cashmere wood bring resinous depth that holds the rose and immortelle in place.
