The Story

Released in 2021, Hibiscus Mahajád grew from founder Thibaud Crivelli’s experience of drinking hibiscus tea in a gemstone market. The perfume builds on the tea’s tart, fruity character, with rose and vanilla accentuating its rosy, vanillic side, and sets the brightness of hibiscus against spiced leather and spearmint. Maison Crivelli, founded in 2018, centers each creation on an unexpected discovery of a raw material.

How It Smells

Opening
Bold, vibrant and immediately unforgettable, a dazzling blend of hibiscus, cassis, peppermint and cinnamon. It feels juicy, sparkling and electric, like chilled hibiscus tea poured over crushed berries with a flash of fresh mint.

Heart
Richer and more sensual. Damask rose and hibiscus bloom into a lush floral heart that feels velvety, jammy and luxurious, while leather and ambrette add texture and warmth, a seductive contrast between sweetness and depth.

Dry Down

The Story

The house frames Oud Maracujá as a passion fruit tasting in remote oud wood forests: the richness of oud set against bright, exotic fruit, in a thirst-quenching fruity oud that is unisex and contemporary in design. Vibrant passionfruit wrapped around refined oud, rather than buried by it, makes it one of the most unusual openings in modern perfumery.

The Story

Egypt comes from the private collection of Albert Fouquet, the perfume enthusiast behind Eight & Bob, and was inspired by his travels in Egypt, by the plants and flowers of an Egyptian friend's garden and by the essences used for thousands of years in the birthplace of perfume. The house itself dates to 1937, when a young American student asked Fouquet for samples, including "one for Bob."

A field of flowers inside the brain. Amygdala by Mendittorosa is one of the most emotional, cerebral and artistic fragrances in modern niche perfumery: a semi-abstract floral, woody and ambery extrait with an iris character, a prominent jasmine and an unusual bitter-almond, coffee and ginger opening.

The Story

Created by Luca Maffei for the Italian artistic house Mendittorosa, Amygdala explores emotion, memory, fear, instinct and olfaction, named for the almond-shaped part of the brain tied to emotion and smell. Founder Stefania Squeglia drew the concept from her psychology studies, imagining a vast field of flowers inside that tiny structure, with violets at its centre. Maffei built a complex floral bouquet around it, inspired by a brain scan that showed an iris-like shape.

A primeval, smoke-charred roar of resin, leather and ancient blooms. Zoologist Tyrannosaurus Rex pairs fir, black pepper and laurel with a heart of rose, champaca and ylang ylang, over a base of cade, frankincense, leather, patchouli and cedar. Perfumer Antonio Gardoni composed it for Zoologist Perfumes, which released it in 2018.

The Story

A sultry heat wafts across the land, lapped up greedily by the abundant flora that thrives in its midst. Trees soar to majestic heights and plants flower for the first time, their petals giving birth to a world rich in diversity. The Cretaceous period comes of age against a backdrop scorched by wildfire and lightning strikes, and over this turbulent landscape a massive predator looms. Giants rule the earth, but even giants can be cut down by the powerful jaws of the fearsome tyrannosaur, who stands tall and fears nothing until a fire in the sky signals the end of the reign. Zoologist Tyrannosaurus Rex is a gargantuan scent that sinks its teeth into the world of delicate fragrances and rips it wide open. Primitive woods and florals snatch you away to an ancient era; smoky, charred wood warns of smouldering fire, while droplets of metallic rose oxide offer a chilling premonition of blood-lust. It is sometimes menacing, sometimes fascinating, but never ordinary.

Maison Crivelli, the French house founded by Thibaud Crivelli, builds this extrait from natural materials of the ORPUR label, a selection of fine ingredients from the Givaudan perfume house, including Indian cardamom absolute, Turkish rose absolute, Indonesian nutmeg and patchouli, Moroccan cedarwood and Venezuelan tonka bean absolute. The house presents it as inspired by a memory of smelling oud at a horse race.

The tiger advances haltingly, intent on its prey, anticipating a moment of vulnerability. In a seamless motion, it leaps and descends upon its victim, its razor-sharp fangs sinking deep into the deer’s throat. As the deer’s life fades, its herd is already gone, evaporating into the night.

Like the thrill inspired by a low, rumbling growl cutting through silence, Zoologist Tiger couples danger with majesty. Vetiver’s earthy body is licked with stripes of kumquat, saffron and jasmine in an elegant pattern. Incense lurks at the edges, shrouded by smoky undertones of papyrus and ebony wood. Tiger arouses intrigue, putting those around you on high alert.

Boccanera is a gourmand inspired by dark chocolate with chili, meant to balance taste and scent, attraction and unease. The name means dark mouth in Italian. Orto Parisi, founded in 2014 as a tribute to Gualtieri's grandfather Vincenzo Parisi, treats the body as a garden whose scents reflect the soul, and explores contrasts between pleasant and harsh, attraction and repulsion.
