The Story

Created by perfumer Quentin Bisch under creative direction by Renaud Salmon, Decision belongs to Amouage's Odyssey collection (2025) and takes inspiration from Jebel Shams, the high Omani mountain. It captures the balance in a major decision between holding a clear goal and staying open to other possibilities. The Eau de Parfum is presented at a 33% oil concentration, aged five weeks, three of maceration and two of maturation.

The Story

Black Afgano was released in 2009 by Nasomatto, the Italian project of perfumer Alessandro Gualtieri. The house says it aims to evoke the best quality of hashish and is the result of a quest to arouse the effects of temporary bliss. It is one of the most recognizable creations of the house.

How It Smells

Dark, dense and immediately hypnotic, with a smoky green accord often associated with cannabis, blended with resinous woods and aromatic herbs. The first impression is mysterious and almost narcotic: earthy, bitter-green and deeply atmospheric rather than sweet. It is one of the most recognizable openings in niche perfumery.

Richer and warmer. Coffee, tobacco, resins, woods and incense rise through the composition, creating a thick, luxurious darkness that feels meditative and sensual. Many wearers describe smoky hashish, dark woods and warm embers rather than a literal cannabis smell.

Dry Down

Opus XVI Timber by Amouage is an elegant woody composition of cypress, juniper, cardamom, lavandin, fir balsam, frankincense and a creamy palo santo and sandalwood base. Created by perfumer Alexis Grugeon and launched in 2025 as part of the Library Collection.

The Story

Inspired by the giant sequoias of California and the frankincense trees of Oman, Timber explores strength, wisdom and nature. The Library Collection takes its cue from libraries and the knowledge they hold, and "Opus" is the Latin word for a writer's or perfumer's work.

It opens with a decadent blend of cognac, apple, saffron, and benzoin—boozy, fruity, spicy, and instantly rich. Amygdala by Mendittorosa is one of the most emotional, cerebral and artistic fragrances in modern niche perfumery: a semi-abstract floral, woody and ambery extrait with an iris character, a prominent jasmine and an unusual bitter-almond, coffee and ginger opening.

The Story

Created by Luca Maffei for the Italian artistic house Mendittorosa, Amygdala explores emotion, memory, fear, instinct and olfaction, named for the almond-shaped part of the brain tied to emotion and smell. Founder Stefania Squeglia drew the concept from her psychology studies, imagining a vast field of flowers inside that tiny structure, with violets at its centre. Maffei built a complex floral bouquet around it, inspired by a brain scan that showed an iris-like shape.

The Story

A sultry heat wafts across the land, lapped up greedily by the abundant flora that thrives in its midst. Trees soar to majestic heights and plants flower for the first time, their petals giving birth to a world rich in diversity. The Cretaceous period comes of age against a backdrop scorched by wildfire and lightning strikes, and over this turbulent landscape a massive predator looms. Giants rule the earth, but even giants can be cut down by the powerful jaws of the fearsome tyrannosaur, who stands tall and fears nothing until a fire in the sky signals the end of the reign. Zoologist Tyrannosaurus Rex is a gargantuan scent that sinks its teeth into the world of delicate fragrances and rips it wide open. Primitive woods and florals snatch you away to an ancient era; smoky, charred wood warns of smouldering fire, while droplets of metallic rose oxide offer a chilling premonition of blood-lust. It is sometimes menacing, sometimes fascinating, but never ordinary.

The Story

Roja Dove has said that, while working in the Middle East, he saw that lovers of oud wanted something new and creative, and began combining aoud with gourmand elements, surrounded by indulgence and edible guilty pleasures. The house frames Sweetie Aoud as a contemporary reinterpretation of a traditional oud fragrance, set in the grand kitchen of a palace where a French pastry chef is at work: buttery sweetness, caramelized sugar and toasted almond against the smoke of agarwood and the frankincense of bakhoor incense. Dry woods and leather balance the sweetness, and the scent belongs to the house's Aoud Collection.
